Discover Front Strand
Front Strand stretches for nearly a kilometre of sandy coastline right in Youghal town, making it one of Cork's most accessible Blue Flag beaches. This long, gently sloping beach combines easy town access with a proper seaside feel, thanks to its extensive boardwalk and promenade system. What sets it apart is the excellent wheelchair accessibility and the way you can walk for miles along either the sand or the elevated walkways. Located in the historic town of Youghal, it offers that rare combination of urban convenience with genuine coastal character.
Location & Access
You'll find Front Strand on the eastern edge of Youghal town in East Cork, easily reached via the N25 coast road. The beach sits right beside the town centre with multiple car parks providing plenty of free parking spaces. Access couldn't be simpler โ follow signs for Youghal seafront and you'll see the parking areas immediately behind the beach. From Cork city, it's about a 45-minute drive east along the coast, while from Waterford you're looking at roughly 30 minutes west.
Beach Characteristics
This is a substantial stretch of sandy coastline with a gentle slope down to the water, mixed with some small pebbles higher up the beach. The shoreline runs in a long, straight line for nearly a kilometre, giving you plenty of space even when busy. Behind the sand, grassy dunes provide natural shelter, while the concrete promenade and timber boardwalk run the entire length of the beach. At low tide, the beach reveals a wide expanse of firm sand perfect for walking, though the tidal range here is quite significant.
Swimming & Water Quality
Front Strand holds Blue Flag status with Excellent water quality ratings, making it one of the safer swimming beaches in Cork. Lifeguards patrol during the official bathing season from June to mid-September, providing additional safety cover. The water can be choppy when Atlantic swells roll in, and the significant tidal range means conditions change notably between high and low tide. During rough weather, waves can actually overtop the lower concrete walkway, so check conditions before entering the water.
Surrounding Landscape
From the beach, you're looking out across Youghal Bay towards the open Atlantic, with Capel Island visible offshore on clear days. The town rises gently behind the beach, dominated by the distinctive Youghal Clock Gate Tower and church spires. To the east, the coastline curves away towards more dramatic headlands and cliffs, while westward the bay opens out towards the broader Cork coast. The landscape feels genuinely coastal rather than urban, despite the town setting, with the wide bay creating an impressive sense of space and sea views.
Activities & Things To Do
Walking dominates here โ you can spend hours exploring either the sandy beach itself or the excellent boardwalk and promenade system. Swimming is popular during calmer summer conditions with lifeguard supervision available. The beach attracts anglers, particularly from the rocky areas at either end, though we'd recommend checking locally for the best spots. The wide, firm sand at low tide makes for excellent jogging, while the sheltered grassy areas behind provide good picnic spots.
Nearby Services
The Quality Hotel sits right beside the beach offering restaurant meals, bar food, and coffee throughout the day. Regular ice cream and coffee vans service the beach during busy periods, parking conveniently near the main access points. Youghal town centre lies just a few hundred metres inland, providing supermarkets, cafes, pubs, and all essential services. For more extensive shopping or dining options, you'll find everything you need within easy walking distance of the beach.
Photography & Scenery
The elevated boardwalk provides excellent vantage points for capturing the full sweep of this expansive bay and beach. Early morning light illuminates the town's historic skyline beautifully, while the western orientation makes for decent sunset shots across the water. The boardwalk itself creates strong leading lines in photographs, drawing the eye along the coastline. During stormy weather, dramatic wave shots are possible from the safety of the promenade, and the contrast between the urban backdrop and wild Atlantic creates compelling compositions.
Nearby Accommodation
The Quality Hotel Youghal provides the most convenient accommodation, situated directly adjacent to the beach with sea views from many rooms. Youghal town offers several guesthouses and B&Bs within walking distance of Front Strand, catering to various budgets. For self-catering options, search booking platforms for 'Youghal' or 'East Cork coast' to find holiday homes and cottages near this scenic stretch of coastline. The town's central location makes it an excellent base for exploring the broader Cork and Waterford coastal areas.
